Hi Jerius. I grew up in Santa Maria. I do not believe it was on foster road. If I remember correctly the trees in the background are where Foster Road is and was. The drag strip was probably North of the road by 1/8 mile, at the southern End of airport. Google map it.

Hi Calvin, do you recall the exact configuration of the strip? Some sites say it is now Foster rd, however, that does not look correct. If you can share additional information, would you email me at kodachrome@verizon.net ? Thank you. Jerius Williams

Steve Evans was a later announcer and never ran the dragons drag strip. He came in 1967 or 68 when a speed shop owner from LA took over the strip. Prior to that it was operated by The Santa Maria Dragons until the early 60's When Jack Tremmer and Bob Parker operated it for a short time. The Dragons reorganized when the strip fell upon hard times and ran it until the LA operator along with Steve as announcer. I may be off on the dates somewhat. I was drafted into the Military about that time and lost track of it. But when I returned there was a different strip in a different location.

Formerly Iverson Motors, "Home of the Hiking Viking", which was open from 1959 until about 201l. The interesting late '50s-early '60s architecture has been defaced by an ugly "modern" archway and crappy signage - obviously the work of some slack-jawed, soulless drone.

Santa Maria's historic movie theatre was torn down for this crappy hunk of junk. Great job!
  • Del Taco, desu wrote 13 years ago:
Both are apparently owned by the same person, who drives a roofless Datsun Z. Although this is the newer Del Taco, the "quality" sucks. The one on South Broadway is the best.

Great manager, better tacos. Even the cheap regular tacos are crammed with fillings.

  • Motel 6 Santa Maria 635, desu wrote 14 years ago:
Seedy and filthynasty in the oh-god-I-need-another-shower sort of way. Spend the extra change and stay at the much cleaner and nicer Holiday Inn next door.
  • Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Santa Maria, desu wrote 14 years ago:
Though more expensive than the Motel 6 next door, this Holiday Inn is much cleaner, has better security, offers bar/food vouchers, has full suites, and offers better amenities.
